Letter from our IMBA rep regarding National Scenic Trails and long distance rides

Hi everyone, this is a great article about the current debate regarding access to long distance trails, and very pertinent regarding the Pacific Crest Trail, among others.

I will be attending the upcoming National Scenic Trails Conference in Tucson, along with our attorney (Jeremy) and will likely be met with a negative response from some national scenic trails staff, who do not want to see mountain bikes on 'their' trails. I'm OK with that and prepared to respond to it, and lobby for more access, that's my job.

Anyway, if you could please post the link on your chapter and club Facebook pages, that would be much appreciated. We need to spread this message far and wide.

Thanks, Patrick

Map and General Description of the Wonderschlautt Epic Ride

Wonderschlautt Epic Ride
October 19, 2013
A detailed description and gpx file will be posted prior to the ride.

The Epic Ride will take riders on a rugged, adventurous route from downtown Prescott over the steep ridges east of town following a network of lesser traveled trails. The climbs are loose, steep, and rocky, and some of the descents are treacherous and technical. The distance will be roughly 28 miles with 5,000 feet of climbing. This is obviously not a beginner ride. Come prepared to navigate on your own, fix your own bike problems, and generally take care of yourself. The ride will leave from Park Plaza at 7 am, but given the length and difficulty of the route, the group will spread out quickly. There will also be several options for short-cutting the route should you desire to get back to Prescott sooner. Detailed cues and a GPX file will be posted the week prior to the Wonderschlautt Festival.
The route will head south out of town on Hwy 89 (Montezuma becoming White Spar), and turn left off White Spar Rd onto Trail 373, following it to Trail 81, then 396 and 299 (Watershed) up to the high point on the route. Trail 9854 (Sevenmile Gulch) will take riders down to the Lynx Lake area before picking up 305 and FR 9401T. The route then loops clockwise around 95 (Salida Gulch) and climbs back up FR 9401T to 305. After reaching to the northern terminus of 305, riders will climb 62 (Ranch) and join 126 (Boyscout) and Turley to return to town. Food and water will be available immediately before joining 305 at the Lynx Lake Store/Cafe.
